St. Elizabeth of Hungary was a 13th century princess turned queen. Known for her compassion for the poor and sick of her kingdom, she gave bread to those who waited at her gate. Upon the death of her husband the King, who was killed in the crusades, she herself became poor, joining the Secular Franciscan Order.
